THE MOA DISTRICT.
RECENTLY MERGED ROADS. At a meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, the engineer submitted the following report on the roads in the Moa District that were recently merged into the Council. The Egmont Road lias been attended to. The road is now in excellent order. Kaipi Road.—Metal on this road is very thin and rough up to Mr. F. Price's, beyond which it is unmetalled up to the boundary of the Waitara West Road Board. The settlers 011 this road have been giving free labor in raking up loose stones, patching and blinding and some of the larger stones have been napped over and further free labor is- available. The water tables have been fixed up throughout. There is a culvert which requiries renewing forthwith. This culvert carries the stream which crosses tlie Junction Road at the Egmont Factory, and requiries 4ft concrete pipes. The culvert at the Junction Road is three feet ;n diameter and the stream picks up a tributary between that and Kaipi Road. * Upland Road is in fair order. Foreman is engaged water tabling and patching. There are about 00 cubic yards of boulders to be broken on this road. The bride at the lower end reqvires deck renewals. King Road requires considerable attention. There is a hill near Mr. Blackburn's which could be materially improved if regraded, and I, think free labor is procurable for this purpose, and from there forward to Mr. Longstatf's requires forming. Beyond this it is only a paper road, and in my opinion will remain so as the lines upon which it is lftid oil' are practically impossible. Lepper Road requires water tabling and the loose stones raking up, and if scarified and rolled could be put into very fair order. Tfcere is a considerable amount of broken inetal on this road, and also a small quantity of unbroken metal. The culverts require opening up. There is a very good pit oft the Lepper Road from.,>vhich large quantities of stone are available and there is also, a pii on Mr, W. J. Davies property. The. road is not formed right' through to Waiongona, but it would not be a costly job and then the metal would be cheap for the Mountain Road. Notices to settlers re gorse, etc., will have to be served.
Hursthousa Road is metalled to Air. Yates', and is then, with the exception of a short distance of about 6 chains, unmetalled right up the Waitara Riding boundary. Considerable amount of attion required on water taoling and providing a culvert here and there. Roads, generally.—There is a lot of work for the small roller on most of the roads which would effect marked improvements. I would recommend' that the foreman should oe given additional assistance for at least three months. He is doing excellent work, but progress is slow single-handed. Cr. Morton considered that there were a couple of bridges on the HursUi Road that required renewal and tin fineer will report on these later.
Councillors expressed the opinion ti, it would be advisable to go slow'in tl. matter of expenditure on these roads, but it was agreed that it would bc ; necessary to give the foreman assistance for a couple of months.
