TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Concluding day at Ellerslie. Bisogne was very unlucky on Saturday. The Captain Macky boom ha 3 burst very suddenly.' Rewi Poto and Paraoa shaped very poorly at the Otaki meeting. followers of Tilly's horses must havij had a bad time also at Otaki. Veto and Maid o' Gowric paid good prices on Saturday. Fancy the firsti;amed paying, several tirnes the limit! Rio, who hails from Bulls, can go like the wind. A second and third at Ofvki are only precursors of a really gooij win. Everybody appears io.liavc won hundreds over the El Gallo double. Judging by the way the public was "scaled" over the Rieearton and Wanganui doubles the winners will be lucky if they can collect!
History repeats itself. Both last year and this El Gallo ran off \yith the Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeples, and Harbor Light Won. the Jumpers' Flat Race twice also. El Galio's magnificent achievement "tends out on its own. Liberator was th« on)v other horse to win the double, ai'd l'.l Gallo''' double success is likely to rema.'r on the books as a record for many years co come. Mr. Ralph's champion Jjcat a fine field in the Hurdles on SaturJay. and his time was only threefifths of a second worse than Wimmera's record for the race. In the Steeplechase, El Gallo badly smashed the previous best time recorded, and carried the biggest weight since Kiatere won in slow time in 1907. Hats off to El Gallo. -
A lot, of good money changed hands when Depredation failed to hop off with his opponents on Saturday, but on the second, day he made 110 mistakes and won ricelv.
7 lie .lonnnctioM of Darby Paul, it is alleged, really gave the old fellow a ehance in the second steeplechase at Gtaki, and ho did surprisingly well to gain third berth. When Charlie Cochrane rode the old nag out to contest tie Dentyry Hurdles at Wanganui the other day, some wag in the crowd called out, "Take him to the front Charlie, and stay there!" '>
Bisogne shaped better than , the rest of the Tarajlftki, division—Glsnroy, Hushman, and Royal Chef—in the Members' Handicap Saturday, at Ellers!ie. „ - Royal Chef was the only one of the trio decently backed, and after getting away well lie ran a fine race, finishing fourth. The wiiher, Bluestone, gave J. O'Shea his only winsing ride during the. afternoon. Styrax ran a great race in the Great Northern Hurdles, jind going s alpng the £ack. the- last time looked , tp; hive ,a rosy chance. The last half mile found him out, however, an<t he coyld only finish fifth. What a moral he would be for a two miles race one of these fine days! The New Zealand Herald's sporting writer thus describes the Great Northern Hurdle Race: El Gallo was favorite, itarbor Light rushed to the front momentarily at the barrier rise, while Fiirsefiller lost several lengths. Gladful, Gluepot, and Marton were among the first over the initial fence, at which obstacle Spalperion and PursefiHer .'ell. filuepot had Marton as a companion out in front of Tenacious, Centenary, and Harbor Light passing the stand, but going down the bank the first time filuepot went out alone, with" Tenacious, Marton, Centenary, aiid Harbor Light Marton, Centenary, Gladful, and Te Onga all handy, El Gallo going nicely at this stage, and Soulfikolf well in the rear. filuepot still held command coming into the straight the second time, hut racing past the main stand Scott rushed El Gallo up to the leader on the rails, and the pair carried on the running over the hill a mile from home, with Styrax. third. Centenary, Tenacious, Te Onga, and Tararu Jack within range. Naupata was now last, and Sonltikoff beginning to move more kindly. Down the back the last time several threatened El Gallo, and Styrax and Tararu Jack headed the favorite at the hurdle past the six furlong post. El Gallo was, however, always going well, and, taking command again, lie led into I the straight, with Te Onga and Tararu ■Tack in hot pursuit. Te Onga was no.v the most serious opponent to El Gallo, and there was little difference between tlie pair as they rose at the last fence, but once over that Scott applied the pressure, and El Gallo sustained the strong challenge thrown out by Te Onga, and won gallantly by a length aiul a half, with Tararu Jack six lengths furthei;,b(f third. ' Gladful fourth',vand Sty rax'/iSoultikotf, Ulster, Tenacious, Centenary, Marton, Glnepot, and Naupata in that .order. Harbor Light fell at the last fence. The official timekeeper, Mr. J. K. ©ouglas, struck the following records fol the various distances of the race: Tivo ,'urlongs, 28 3-ssee; four furlongs, s!ls. -<i.v furlongs, 1.28 3-3; one mile, 1.5!); U furlongs, 2.43 2-5; 14 furlongs, 3.K two m iles, 3,55- 2} mile.", 4.52 3-5».
