17th REINFORCEMENTS.
SURPLUS OF ME>f. (Government Memorandum.) Wellington, May 31. The Hon. W. V. Massey, President of of the Recruiting Board, forwards the following memorandum to the press:— As was anticipated from the previous returns of enlistments, there is no doubt that the 17th Reinforcemnts will mobilise in camp this week 'well over strength, the official figures of registrations for the infantry and all"other arms of the service being full as at date of Friday last, the 26th inst. These are as follows: ("iron]) 1, Auckland Citv. Surplus 172 Group 2, Paeroa. Shortage 15. Croup 3, YVhangarei. Surplus, 2. Group 4, Hamilton. Shortage, 11. Total surplus for Auckland Military District. 148. Group 5, Wellington City. Surplus, 3 Group 0, Palmerston North. Surplus 12. ' Group 7, Napier. Shortage, 38. Group 7a, Masterton. Shortage, 2. Croup 8, Ilawera. Surplus, li). Total shortage for Wellington Military District, 0. ('.'roup n, Chriittehurclt City. Shortage, 1!). Group 10, Timaru. Surplus, 28. Group 11, Kaiapoi. Surplus, !). Group 11 a, Greymouth. Shortage, 15. Group 12, Nelson. Surplus, 14. Total surplus for Canterbury 'Military District, 17. Group 13, Dunedin City. Surplus, fl. Group 14, Invercargill' Surplus, 3. Group 15, Oamarit. Shortage, 17. Group 10, Milton. Surplus, 10. ' Total surplus for Otngo Military District, 5., The total Dominion surplus for the 17th Reinforcements is Kit. There was existing at the date of Friday last a shortage on previous drafts of 120, and a shortage arising out of wastage in camp of 121, or a total of 241. It will therefore be seen that the total Dominion shortage under all heads at the date, of Friday last, the 20th inst., was 77. i WELLINGTON DISTRICT SHORT. The local Defence. Office lias been notified that the Wellington Military Dis- [ trict quota for the 17th Reinforcements ! is considerably short, and any volunteers desirous of getting away immediately may do so. They liould report to the Defence Office at once. |
