BUTTER FOR EGYPT.

NORTH TARANAKI'S CONTRIBUTION", i (From Our Spotswood Correspondent.) Although tins matter of sending Taranaki butter to Egypt for the u:w of soldiers in tlic firing line and hospitals ha's been under consideration for many months, no organised effort lias been made till this month, when a inciiiber of the New Plymouth Women's Patriotic Committee undertook to start the scheme. An appeal was made to eighteen dairy companies, and almost all have generously responded. The committee have roason' to feel very grateful to these companies and to all those who have helped to make what promised to 'be a rather arduous task into a comparatively easy one. Thanks are tendered to Mr. McLeod, who kindly undertook the typing of the circulars; to Mr. Carter, who went to considerable inconvenience to provide butter boxes for packing, and to all who sent in tins for canning. Mr. Morrison willingly gave permission for the butter to be stored at the freezing works, and the ladies expected to do the canning themselves, but Mr. ■ Birch-Johnston very generously offered to prepare, fix and pack at the works, providing the necessary consent was obtained from Mr. Cuddie, Chief Dairy Inspector, who was pleased to allow the work to be done. The ladies are more than grateful, to Mr. Johnston and his assistants for this kind action, for they are now assured that the butter will leave the Dominion in prime condition, and as cool .storage has been promised on a transport leaving each month, there is no reason why, unless handled in an outrageously careless manner at the other end, it should not be as good when it ; reaches its destination as when it leaves here. For May the consignment consists of five boxes of butter. Mr. W. R. Wright, Rahotu, and Mr. 1). Hughes, Spotswood, have each donated one 'box, and it is practically due to their liberality that the scheme was got under way this month. Besides these, one box each was received from Xorth Taranaki. Waitara and Tikorangi Dairy Companies. It is proposed in future to can about three boxes each month for the men in the firing-line, and to send the rest to hospitals in Egypt and elsewhere, where good butter is seldom to be obtained. As regards cans, '/ ; lb and.lib Bell Tea tins, or others of similar shape, are found to he the most convenient as yet, so if householders and others would please save this kind of tin it would be a help. Also, if anyone knows of a better receptacle than the tins for small quantities of butter, will he kindly' communicate his knowledge to the committee. Following is the list of dairy companies that have, so far, replied to the appeal, and the .quantity of butter they offer to supply:—Lcpnnrtpn. half-box per month; Mangorei. half-box per month; North Taranal.., one box per month; Waitara. one box per month; Tikorangi. one box per month: Stratford, one box for June and July at ■ least; Maketawa. quantity not decided as yet; ("ruti valley, closing down, hut will donate two boxes ; Okau and Ta--1 rata, closed Mown for the season; Mid. hirst and MoV Companies cannot suppl \ any this season. j
