DISTRICT NEWS.
NORFOLK ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A social was held at Norfolk Road Scholo on the night of Friday, 26th inst., to bid farewell and God-speed, with a promise of a hearty welcome home, to three young ioldiers from this neighborhood, whose final leave expires on Monday. /There was a remarkably good gathering, considering Hie weather. Young folk and old folk from all around Iviimata, Tariki, Tarata, and Inglewood were represented, so the send-off may ' e classed a good one, as, of course, all the immediate surrounding district contributed to the numbers present. As is usual on such occasions, dancing and songs for the younger, and cards and yarns for the older folk filled in the time till about 10.30 p.m., when Mr. H. Trimble made the presentation to the three departing defenders of our liberty and honor, Messrs. Len. Brown, Gordon Henl, and Lorrie Inston, who each received a wristlet watch. To Len Brown also was given a fountain pen, a special memento from his fellow-corkers of the Norfolk Road Entertainment 1 Committee, whose honorary secretary he has been for some time past. Before bid- ' ding these young soldiers farewell, Mr. Tnmble briefly explained the action of the Education Board with regard to offering free technical instruction to returned soldiers to enable those who can still follow the calling they had before going to the war to improve their positions in such callings, as well as to open avenues of usefulness and livelihood to any who may be, through sickness or wounds, unable to do such work as they have been used to in the past. Having assured the lads of the hearty good wishes of all for their welfare and our hope to welcome them home the presentation was duly made. Each of the recipients suitably replied. The piano gave the note, and all present more or less musically assured ihem that "they were jolly good fellows.." Supper was then handed round by willing helpers and dancing again Slled the bill. "The cows- are pretty well all dry; it is not separating day to-morrow, besides that, the moon ain't np yet, so what's the use of hurrying home, brother Bill?"
