TARANAKI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.
THE NEW SHOWGROUNDS, . There was a good attendance of members at the Town Hall, New Plymouth, on Saturday afternoon, when a special general meeting of the Tar.anaki Agricultural Society was held to consider J the passing of certain resolutions to en- c able dcheiitnres to he arranged, so that <t the Society's new grounds at Waiwa- i kaiho may he converted into up-to-date t showgrounds. I Mr. J. S. Connett, president, stated f that it would be remembered that at a 1 meeting held some twelve months'ago ■ the Society was in a critical state. It s was decided to give the Society another i chance.' and a committee was set up ' to see if it were possible to put more > life into the Society and to raise funds '■' for a new ground. He was pleased to t report that just on !)00 members had ' paid their subscriptions, and the full ' nmonnt of .£3OOO debentures had been x promised. The committee, therefore. ' felt justified in going on with the new • '.'round and were now seeking the necessary authority to raise the debentures. r licfevring to tlie new ground, he said x that when giving further consideration to the setting out of the new grounds '- it was considered advisable to secure a lease of the V/« acres, over which they ; had rights nivlv at show times, as they ! might want to improve the ground by uianting trees at the road line. The land was already lea=ed to the Farmers' Freezing Coinpanv,'whose directors were ! sympathetic and would offer no objee- ' tion. piovided thev could obtain the , grazing rights. Tie bad also made repre- C sentations to the Minister for Defence, ' Vi'ho said that he would u=e his best ] endeavors to give efi'eet to the matter, which was now under consideration. Messrs Sladdon and Palmer had been engaged to take out levels, and had given , an estimate of the cost of prewiring the ' ring at £2-20. Mr. (!. W. Browne'esti- ' r mated the cost of the neees-ary build- . ings, yards, pens, loose-bnxei, etc.. , would be ,e2")fKI. It was only proposed to do as little as possible at present, owing to the high- cost of materials. Mr Quilliam, solicitor to the Society, was present and detailed the necessary ' procedure. ■ ' As Mr. A. L. Humphries, secretary, • may be leaving for the front at any ; time. Mr. IT. Stocker was appointed ' treasurer in connection with signing the j debentures. On the motion of the chairmnn and Mr. W. P.. Grant, the formal resolution was unanimously passed, giving author- , itv to raise debentures, as follows: "That Section n of the Agricultural and ( Pastoral Societies Act. 100S, be adopted, and that the committee of management of the Society be authorised to iborrnw [ for all or any purpose, mentioned in ' the said section a sum not exceeding , £3OOO, at a rate of interest not ex- . needing 0 per cent, per annum, on se- ', curity of a mortgage of the lands of ' the Society, or by the issue of £5 de- ', hentuves to that amount, or. by such means as the commitce shall think St, , and otherwise in accordance with the ; said Section 0: and the president, a , vice-president and the treasurer of the ,; Society V''c hereby authorised to affix , the seal of the Society to any mortgage , or debentures for and on behalf of the , Society.'' i On the motion of the president a»d , Mr. Alien, the management committee ; was given authority to .appoint two j trustees for the debenture holders. This , concluded the formal business. I Mr Sladden outlined the work that ; was proposed to be carried out. Levels had been obtained for the ring, which was seven chains long and five chains wide, and oval at each end. He suggested that it -would be more economical to have the work carried out privately rather than by tender. After the ring is completed the other levels will he fixed. At a subsequent meeting the executive arranged with Mr Parkin to carry out the work on the ring and a start will be made next week. The committee intend to call up the debenture money in five instalments, though not less than £•"> will be called up the first time. If debenture holders like to pay down the whole of the money when taking up the debenture, this can be done.
