WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Yesterday. In spite of the inclemency of the v.vather, the fvcwcll social given in the Clifton Hall last evening to those leaving on Monday morning to join the 17th Reinforcements was very well attended, and resulted in a very enjoyable evening being spent. Songs were contrihited by Miss L Burkett, Mrs. Roberts, and Mr. .Henderson, the two latter having to respond to numerous encores. A duet by Mlsjps D. Spurdlc and Burkett was greatly appreciated. The music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Can- (p'.M-.o), and B. Murgatroyd (violin), with extras by Misses Frost ar.d .Tupp, Mr, M. Fowler and LanceCorporal Feek. 'I he duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. H. Eggleton. Great interest, is being taken in the "Hard-up" Social, which is to be held i:i the Clifton Hall on Thursday next-, June Ist, under the auspices of the Ladies' Sewing Grild, the proceeds being devoted to the Guild's Funds. The Guild has just recently been formed and the public will have the opportunity on Thursday evening of setting it on a strong foundation. The best musical talpnt is being obtained, as are also the services of Mr. Eggleton, who will act as M.C. Captain Chudiey (Marine Superintendent of the Rliuw, Savill, and Albion Cm, of Wellington, was in Waitara this morning, and inspected the loading arrangements in connection with this port. The s.s. Talnu: arrived here yesterdny afternoon w'th 100 tons of cement from the Terakohe,cement works.
