SOME GERMAN GAINS.
AFTER HE AW CASUALTIES. Paris, May 24. A communique says: The Germans, under cover of a gas curtain, attacked westward of Xavarin, in Champagne, but our curtain of fire drove thorn back to their trendies.
The Germans attempted a powerful night offensive eastward of Mort Homme, There was a, 'hand-to-hand struggle, and, alter heavy sacrifices, they gradually penetrated the village of Cumicres, also a trench immediately westward. Over three divisions attacked.
Equally violent bombardments and attacks took place at Ilaudromont and Douaumont. Despite the enemy's desperation and carelessness of life, after amazing sacrifices, they only succeeded m occupying the sections eastward of Fort Douaumont. The attacks elsewhere were broken.
