The Wanganui Jockey Club's .vinter meeting takes place to-day and on Saturday. Unfortunately 'heavy rain set in at an early hour on Wednesday morning and continued all day. Consequently the course is likely to be heavy for today's racing, and the task of picking winners—always a risky one at steeplechase meetings—should keep the public very (busy all day. The programme opens with the Borough Handicap (6" furlongs), for which a good field of thirteen is carded. Greenstreet is nominal favorite, but the going may upset the southerner's chances. Coropet—a veritable mudlark—must have a fair chance, and Mia Cara is another favored by the mud. The nine engaged in the Hack Steeples could by no stretch of imagination be called a select crowd. Flingot has a fine record over the small sticks, but ihe shaped ingloriously over country on Tuesday morning, stopping at every fence and finally refusing at ths double. Nita has been fencing well since her arrival at headquarters, and Captain Dick, Paramata, and Tailiape have all shaped nicoly. Possibly Tailiape and Nita may he best backed to-day. Then comes the Wanganui Steeples (3 miles). The likely starters number about eleven,. and rarely las the race appeared so open. Jackman and Daylight Bill look as fit as any of the topweights, Bercola in particular appearing very 'backward. Naupata is very .well, and no fault can be found with Hurakia. Braebum and New York on the score of condition. Possibly the wet going affected Hurakia's fencing yesterday, but it was not impressive. Braebum fences well, and is likely to be well backed. New York got round safely on Tuesday morning, but he is only a handful, and the stronger division may hold him easily.' Much may happen in the cross country event, but with any shade of luck Naupata and Jackman may be expected to render a good account of themselves. Pursefillcr is in the boom for the Kaitoke Hurdles, but neither she nor Crown Pearl jumped well since arriving at Wanganui. Still, the former comes with a big reputation from Hawke's Bay, and she may shape better with the pace on. Austin is looking a 'ball of muscle and must run a great race. The Century Hurdles (2% mile?) should see eleven go to the post. Tararua Jack is a firm favorite, and his jumping has been splendid of late. Styrax shaped well yesterday, and is apparently in good nick. Sir Donald and Art look well, but they have all the worst of the haudieap. Marton is galloping well and fencing with all Ms old time speed. His party is snid to be very sanguine, but most people would like to see him prove that lie can "come' back'' before they backed him. Aruake galloped strongly yesterday morning, and may he the fittest of Walter Radnor's trio. Possibly Tararua Jack and Styrax will give their followers a good run over the long journey—two and a quarter miles. Zola is still the talk of the town for the Connolly Handicap, and the ! Wanganui horse is a good one in the; slush. Lady Louisa i.-: another mud-1 lard, and whatever heats them will have to travel fast. Leonta put up a good trial before leaving Fordcll. A good start will have muck to do with the settlement of the Puma Hack Handicap, the field for which is likely to number about twenty-four. Zola (if re- j served), Cello and Antwerp may com- ' inand most support. Daylight Bill received a knock on the knee on Tuesday morning while negotiating the 'big fences, but the injury was only slight.
