A communique says: The enemy in La Gaarina Valley launched five violent attacks upon the slopes north of Zugnatorta, but were driven back with enormous losses. The Adige river carried away numerous corpses. A violent concentrated fire, by guns of every calibre, between Terragaola Valley and Apperastico, resulted in our again straightening our front, after abandoning some of the advanced positions. The enemy on Monday night repeatedly attempted to attack the Asiago sector, but were repulsed with very heavy losses. A vigorous attack at Sugana Valley was similarly repulsed. AUSTRIAN AGGRESSIVENESS. ITALIANS ON THE DEFENSIVE. Milan, May 18. Fighting at Trentino is confined to a fifteen miles' front, but Italian military critics agree that the principal Austrian forces are hoping to force their way on the Venetian Plain from the salient of Sette Conienei. The Italian advanced posts are only a few yards 'from Rovereto, and are inca'yable of serious resistance, but the new positions are still in Austrian territory, and it is believed they are capable of resisting formidable onslaughts. IN TRENTINO. AUSTRIANS HURLED BACK, Received May 19, 10.40 p.m. Rome, May 19. A communique says: Numerous heavy batteries resumed a bombardment of Zipnatorta, and afterwards launched five more violent attacks, but each was hurled back with bloody losses.
