THE ANZACS
REGULAR DAREDEVILS. GERMAN HUMOR. Times and Sydney' Sun Services. Received May 19, 5.5 p.m. Londpn, May IS. When the Germans shelled and raided the Anzacs' trenches last week a large number of the men were off duty. As soon as they heard shells and saw green and red (lares they lined up, without ollieers or non-coms., and rushed io the front line. Many of the men, disdaining the siip-i, crossed the open ground, under fire. Their colonel complimented the men on their smartness and gallantry. A lighter side of the details of the Anzacs' arrival in the trendies has reached London. When the Germnas took the first prisoner they posted up a notice saying, "We are pleased to have an Australian. Now we only require two specimens for the completion of our British Museum—an Esquimaux aur Mrs. Pankhurst."
Another notice consisted of a challenge to a "footer" (association football) match on No Man's Land, the 1 prize being the trenches of the Anzacs. This was pulled out at night by the Anzacs, and replaced by an invitation, "Come to Australia, via iParis." A grimmer' German trick was to bury a 'bomb fastened to a stick with a flag and an inscription, the bomb exploding when the stick was pulled up. The men arc forbidden to touch flags or signboards, a3 it has been found that the trick is for sniping purposes. The only amusement is shooting matches, wherein the Anzacs easily excel.
