TAXING OF PROFITS. 1 Melbourne, May 18. Tn the House, the Treasurer introduced the Taxation of War Profits Bill. A petition in favor of compulsory service, containing 70,000 names, was presented to the Senate. Mr. Pearce said the Government had decided to take the necessary steps to establish a moratorium to prevent foreclosures in respect of loans and mortgage debts, in order to assist soldiers to carry out financial obligations contracted before enlistment. Mr. Pearce refused to abolish the practice of saluting officers outside military operations. TARIFFS AFTER THE WAR. Sydney, May IS. The Chambers of Commerce Conference carried a motion urging the abolition of price-fixing boards and thus preventing the possibility of exploitation. The conference approved preferential tariffs within the Empire, preferential trade with Allied nations, fair and reasonable treatment of neutrals, surtaxes against the nations which forced Britain into the war, and the adoption of permanent measures to prevent dumping oF enemy goods within the Empire. The post-war resolutions will be forwarded to the conference in London in June.
