MANUFACTURE OF MUNITIONS. Melbourne, May 17. The Minister of Defence announced that he has approved of factories manufacturing 4in. shells. The Broken Hill Company is progressing in experiments to overcome steel defects in 18-pounders. SOLDIERS IN CAMP. Melbourne, May 17. An analysis of 60.987 cards received from soldiers asking for employment and willing to take up positions shows that 25 per cent, have been promised reinstatement in their former employment, 17,002 desire to settle on the land, 11,040 state that they have had previous experience on the soil. The number who have no provision for future employment is 25,256.
WHEN THE WAR WILL END. A PROPHECY. Sydney, May 17. Mr. 'Pratten, ex-president of the New South Wales Chamber of Manufacturers, who is now assisting in the munition campaign in England, in a letter, prophecies a definite conclusion to the war in our favor by the end" of October.
