DISTRICT NEWS.
PUKEARUHE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A social gathering was held here on the 9th inst., to welcome Driver M. IS. Waterson, home from the front after .what must be considered a very trying time. While fighting he was buried in his dugout through the bursting of a shell, and he was only rescued in the nick of time through his comrades seeing one o; his hands exposed. He was next taken to hospital, suffering from frostbite, hence the reason of his being sent home. Dancing was the order of the evening, to music supplied by Mrs. Cartwright (f'ukearuhe) and. Miss Richardson (Uruti). At midnight a halt was called for supper, provided by the ladies of the district. When justice had been done to all the good things, Mr. Herbert Wells presented Driver Waterson (on betialf of the settlers) with a wristlet watch. The jeung soldier found it a harder task to express his gratitude than to fight the Turks. After singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" more dancing was indulged In, an 3 songs were rendered I>y Mr. H. Wells and Cecil Rowe. Mr. Wattie Milne, as M.C., kept things going until an enjoyable evening terminated by the singing of the National Anthem.
