THE CALL FOR MEN, RECRUITING PROGRESSES. PRIME MINISTER'S OPTIMISM. A telegram received last night from the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey) gives narticulars of the manner in which the new :ecruiting scheme has called eligiu'e men to the colors. Mr. Masscy's telegram reads:—The position generally throughout the Dominion with icspect to recruitng continues satisfactory. This is particularly the case in all districts where the new recruiting scheme lias been, or is being, carried out, and the figures given below, showing the number of infantry registered in rMich pvoup up to the 12th of May for the 17th Reinforcements, which will not he mobilised to go to camp for training for another fortnight, yet indicate that there is every likelihood of this draft coming in at full strength. The official figures are as follows: — Group 1 (Auckland Qity) plus 123; group'2 (Paovr.a), short 45; group 3 (Whangarei), short 37: group 4 (Hamilton), short 58, Total shortage for Auckland MiliUry District. 17. Group 5 (Wellington City), short 48; group <i (Palm.'rston North), short 40; group 7 (Napier), short !)0; group 7a (Masterton), short '10; group 8 (Hawera), short 34; total shortage for Wellington Military District, 232. Group 9 (Chtistchurch City), short 76; group 10 (Timaru;, plus 1; group 11 (Kaiapoi), short 37; group 11a (Groymouth), short 31; group 12 (Nelson), short 7; total shortage for Canterbury Military District. 150.
Group 13 (Dunedin City*, short 4; group 14 (Invercargill), short 10; group 15 (Oamaru), fhort 38, group Ki (Milton), short 5; total shortage for Otago Military district 03. Totai Dominion shortage for 17th Reinforcements 402. as compared with a shortage of S3O on the corresponding day last week, in addition to 125 men who were sent into camp to make good the shortages rn previous drafts, or a total of 493 medically unfit men for the seven days prior to the 12th inst. ■ The total 3hortage at date for the 17th and previous drafts is 017, and if last week's rate of recruiting is maintained this number will be easily secured in the time available—a full fortnight.
THE NATIONAL REGISTER. INTERESTING FIGURES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington Last Night. Hon. G. W Russell laid before the House a paper -ivin;{ details of the National Register. It was shown that there were " ?03,704 effectives in the country, of whom 450',' had been accepted for the Expeditionary Forces, and 17,307 were British subjects between the ages of 17 and JB. There were 112,778 willing to Decome members of Expeditionary Forces, 44.33S were prepared to serve in a civil capacity, and 35,725 were not prepared to se vc in any capacity. He mentioned that in the latter group there wore those who were physically unfit, and others were in gaols and other phce=. 9343 had volunteered, and had been rejected; 458S were foreign subjects; 09,799 were British subjects between the ags-s of 45 and 50, and 434 were returned soldiers. The nationality of those on the National Reeisler'is as follows: Born in New ' Zealand 195,992- in Australia 18,542; England and Wr.;les 49,836; Scotland 10,407; Ireland 110,24"
