The police were powerless to do anything, and the women emerged with legs of mutton, cuts of meat, sides of bacon, hams and poultry. The refrigerating chambers were found to be packed with provisions. Amid cries of "Down with thieving!" the butchers' building was stormed and the police knocked down and trampled upon. The mob from the upper windows threw the crowds strings of sausages, hams, and other provisions. Dozens of women fainted and lay in the street uncarcd for in the rush. Mounted police came to the rescue of their comrades and drove the rioters into the side streets.
