UNIVERSITY MATTERS.
POWERS OF THE SENATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. In reply to a letter from the University Senate asking for a definition of the relations and powers respectively of the Senate and the Board of Studies, the Solicitor-General informed them that legislation by the Senate must take place either with the consent of the Board or after full consultation with it in default of consent. The Senate passed a resolution asking for an amendment of the Act to make it plain that the Senate has power to legislate without referring the subject back to the Board for further consideration. A letter from the chairman of the Board was received stating that representatives of al| the colleges but Auckland desired the Senate to agree to appoint a committee to arrive at an agreement as to the interpretation of certain clauses and produce something in the nature of standing orders, also to discuss allied questions. The Senate decided to let the recommendations lie on the table till the next I annual meeting.
