STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening. PresentThe Mayor (Cr. J. W. Boon), Crs. Davey Hancock, Hunter, Lawson, Mills, Thompson, Stanley, Young. Mr. J .T. Goodrick applied for an entrance to his property in Cordelia St. —Referred to the Works Committee. Secretary, Hospital Board, informed the Council that their monthly contributing would be £IG 3s 2d. The Council confirmed the resolution agreeing to a transfer of the lease of shops in Municipal Buildings, from Messrs. Webster, Dobson, and Co., to A F. Mollison, New Plymouth. Cr. Hunter said tliat he had been appointed with the Mayor, as a committee to deal with the electric light agreement, and was surprised to see° the agreement on the table that evenin-* He felt he had Seen slighted. ° His Worship said there was only a small machinery clause to be inserted in the agreement, and he had telephoned to Cr. Hunter, but he was away. As the matter was urgent, the Mayor said he had agreed to the clause. Cr. Thompson complained of .the loose metal lying about the streets, and thought the engineer should be instructed to have them picked up. They were a source of annoyance to motorists.—To be attended to. The kerbing in Juliet Street was left to the Works Committee, wtih power to act. Cr. Hunter asked if barbwire fences were allowed on street boundaries. His Worship said it was against the by-laws, and should be stopped—The Works Committee to report. It was decided to again write to the Sergeant of Police, and draw attention to the excessive speed of motorists through the Borough, and ask him to take action against offenders. Cr. Mills drew attention to a hedge that required trimming badly. Corse and box thorn was included in'the hedge, and it was dangerous to pedestrians, "it ~is pointed out that overgrowing hedges were general throughout the Borough, and it was decided to instruct the inspector to attend to. the matter.

The following Committees were appointed for the year: Works—Crs. Davey, Thompson, Young; Fire Brigade —Crs. Stanley, Davey, and Lawson; Lighting—Crs. Thompson. Hunter, and Young; Abbatoirs—Crs. Hancock, Stanley, and Lawson; Town Hall—Crs. Hunter, Mills, and Stanley; Library—Cro. Rutherfurd, Mills, Hancock; Reserves— Crs. Hunter, Lawson, Mills; Band—Cro. Lawson and !?■ j Vrfurd. It was ile \ I that private septic tanks connecteu with the water service be charged 10s per annum. A motion that the water rate for the current year be increased to 9d, and that the special rates for motor lorries be not collected, was held over for a special meeting. Accounts amounting to £377 were passed for payment. The engineer reported: The formation of Julie't Street footpaths has been completed. The newly-formed part on the west side from Celia Street to Mr. Beere's residence has been gravelled. Culverts have been inserted in Broadway South near School grounds, Broadway North, junction Page and Broadway Streets, and one extended in Juliet Street near Mr. King's property. A tunnel has been constructed in Juliet Street at a point three chains south of Celia Street to allow the formation work to be proceeded with. An entrance to Mr, J. Levcrty's property has been constructed. The footpath between Juliet Street and Orlando Street in Lear Street has been gravelled. A slu*-t length of footpath from Lear Street to Celia Street has been gravelled. Watertables have been cleaned up in Broadway North and South, Page Street, Portia, Miranda, and Opunake Roads. The abattoir manager reported that during the month of April 600 cows, 45 heifers, 2 oxen, 8 calves, 213 sheep, 53 lambs, 17 pigs were slaughtered. 6 cows, 4 heifers, 1 calf, 1 pig. and 1 sheep were condemned. Slaughtering fees amounted to £53 8s 6d. The Council decided to sign the agreement between the Electrical Supply Co. and the Couucil for taking over" the Company's undertakings.
