LONDON WOOL SALES

A SPLENDID MARKET.

London, May 5. Wool.—Solid. For the Home market 86,000 bales were sold; for the Continent, 6000; and 7000 bales were held. The market closed very strong. Compared with the March closing choicest Merinos advanced five per cent., medium 10, faulty 10 to 15. Russian buyers are still taking good sorts and otherwise all merinos have been taken by some trades. Pine crossbreds advanced Jd, coarse Id, and medium Id. Scoured wools advanced fully 5 per cent., slipes Id, and all lambs 7} per cent. New Zealand prices:—Craigmore, top, 19d, average 17% d; Burling-, 19d and 183 d; Papartu, 17id and 17y s d.

The demand wis good and we sold practically -ill. the yarding. Prices: Two and a-half-yeai' steers £7 10s, £7 18s Gd for a line of 81, and up to £8 17s (id. light store cows £4 14s (id, medium cowv. £6 10s to £7 Is, empty heifers .-€3 3a (xl to £4 4s, 20-month steers £4 18s to £5 12s (id, mixed weanera £2 3s fid, lambs 15s 2d to l(is 7d, small 2-tooth wethers 21s, small 2-tooth ewes 18s, f.m. ewe:, 15s Id! Our next Kohuratuhi sale will be held on Thursday, May 25. On Friday, April 2S, we held our usual sale in our Te Wera yards, when we had a fair yarding of shfep snd cattle: F.m. ewes 17s 3d, fi-tooth wethers 24s 2S, small 2-tooth ewes 21s, weaner heifers 35s fid to 38s Gd, 2-year empty heifers £4 Ids to £5, 2-year'i.e. heifers £3 10s to £4 10s and £5 16a, light store cows £4 5s to £(i 10s.

Our next Te Wera sale will he held on Friday, May 20. On Tuesday, May 2, we held our usual fortnightly sale in our Stratford yards, when we had a heavy yarding, chiefly of good cows, which sold very freely, Light and small cows £2 las to £3 15s] store cows, light £4 10s to fa 7s Gd, forward cows £7 to £8 Is, fat cows £8 15s to £9' 10s, 2-year i.e. heifers £4 5s to £5 2s Cd, 23-year i.e. heifers £6 Is to £6 10s, weaner heifers 23s to 41s, mixed weaners 32s to 375. Holstein weaner heifers, good, 47s fid, weaner Steers 52a Gd tn 50a fid, bulls, light, £5 to £6 17s fid, 2J-year empty heifers £5 2s Gd to £5 9s, iambs 12s lOd and 13s sd, f.m. ewes, lis and 15s lOd. Our next Stratford sale will be held on Tuesday, May 16.

PRIVATE SALES. Since our last report we have sold several lines in the paddock. Lnmbs are hardening and there is good enquiry for good lambs. F.m. ewes 10s, 20s 3d and 21s, fat empty heifers £6 12s 6d, forward cows £7 to £7 15s, weaner heifers 32s to 365, 24-year in-ealf heifers £6 6s t# £7 15:, 2-year i.e. heifers £5 to £5 6s fid, 20-month steers £4 10s to £4 17s and £5 2s fid, lambs 13s lOd, 14s Gd, 15s Gd, lGs 3d, 2-tooth ewes 255, WOOL, SKINS AND HIDES. We held our usual monthly wsol, skin and hide sale on Tuesday, May 2. We had a fair catalogue of 119 bales and hags of wool, usual quantity »f sheepskins, hides, etc. The attendance was good, and competition somewhat keener than at last sale. The wool was for the most part seedy and reserves very high, so that most shipping lines were passed in. The follewing prices were obtained: Wool: Fleece in sacks ll%d to lljd, lambs Aid to 18kl, cnitehings 71d to Bd, pieces sil to BJd, dead wool 9d to 10d; wool in bales: Fleece, no seed, Is to Is IJd, seedy fleece 7Jd te 18<kl, lambs Is to Is Id, seedy lambs 5d to Sd, pieces 7Jd, crutchings Sd to B.UI. Several shipping lines were passed in at 12Jd to Is Id.

Sheepskins s»ld well at advanced rates: Pelts, little woel, Is fid to Is 9d, fair woolled skins 3s 9d ta 5s Si, well woolled skins Gs to Bs, salted skins, small 2s 4d to 3s 10d.

Hides: Butchers, cew, light, BJd to 9Jd, calfskins 4s, yearlings 7s Od to Bs. Tallew, in tins, 23s 3d. Our next wool, skin and hide sale will be held on June 27, 101 G.
