ATTEMPTED MURDER.

MAORI WOMAN'S JEALOUSY.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, May 2. A sensational incident occurred this morning at a Maori settlement on an island known as Swamarohi, in the Waikato river, and as a result a Maori woman has been arrested on a charge of attempting to murder a Maori named Enoka. The woman and Rnoka were two of the inhabitants of the settlement, and lived with a number of other Maoris in a wliare. According to the natives, the woman became jealous, and at daybreak she left the whare and proceeded to her father's dwelling, where she obtained a shotgun. Upon her return, Enoka was still lying on rugs on the floor of the whare, and without warning she fired at him point-blank. The rugs afforded some protection against the pellets, but some pierced the covering and passed right through his left thigh, causing a gaping wound. Other wounds were inflicted on the lower part of the body. 'Dr. Wake proceeded to the island to attend the wounded man, and he found that he tvas being treated by the natives according to their own ideas of medicine. In spite of all arguments, the injured man refused to allow himself to be removed for treatment at the Auckland Hospital, declaring that he was certain he would die if he entered the hospital.
