THE TRAMWAYS
SUCCESS OF TEMPORARY SERVICE. The tramways engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley), in submitting his 'first annual report states that a temporary tram ser-. vice was commenced on March 10th, 1910, between the New Plymouth railway station and the Waiwaikaiho terminus, Fitzroy, a distance of approximately 2j miles, and figures relating to the receipts and expenditure were given to April 20, 1910, inclusive. This showed that the total recepits in fares, etc., amounted to £sl(i (is Bd, and the expenditure to £373 19s 9d, leaving a balance on the working account of £142 Ss lid. Against this must be placed interest and sinking fund, £B4 Os fid. The following statistics were given: Total passengers carried, 82,805;" car miles run, 7503; passengers per car mile, 11; total units consumed, 10,150; units consumed per car mile, 1.3; revenue per car mile, lfi.Sd; average fare per passenger, 1.54 d; total expenditure per car mile, 14.fid. The above figures were inclined to be somewhat misleading as the period of the temporary service was only a very small portion of a year's working, further it had had many points in its favor which would not show if the same length of service were taken say six months later. However, it did serve to show that the Council was wise in its decision to start this temporary service at the time it did pending the completion of the whole work.
