ST. JOHN'S V. HAWEKA Playing at Haw era on Monday, the holiday touring team? of St. John's bowlers worn defeated by the local club in the morning by 99 to 86, and in the afternoon by 112 to 93. The visitors highly euiogised the Hawera green. OKATO V. OPUNAKE
On Friday last a very pleasant game took place at Opunake between teams representing the Okato and Opunake Clubs. After the visitors had been welcomed by the President of the Opunake Club (Mr. Sorrenson), play was proceded v ith. it being arranged to play 21 heads before lunch and the same number ir the afternoon.
The morning's play proved very even and of an interesting nature, several well contested heads being closely followed bv lookers on. The result was a wholly unexpected victory for Okato by 10 pi iiits. The scores wer", as follow, Okafo baing mentioned first: — Cable, Thomson, Nicol, Franks (s), 22; v. Carrie, Jenkins, Clough, Cornish (s), 11. Gill, l>edon, Hawkins, Roebuck (s), 15; v. McFie, Cannell, Arthur, Des Forges (s), 20. Andrews, Street, McLeod, MeGill (s), 23; v. Parkes, Dtogant, Sorrenson, Dudley (s), 19. The greens which were heavy and slow throughout the morning improved during the day, and the play of the Opunake representatives after lunch improved to such an extent that they completely turned the tables on their opponents, i.nd gave them a severe drubbing. Des Forges' team put up a "possible" against their opponents. The scores were as follow; —
Gable, Thomson, Nicol, Franks (s), 10; v. Carrie, Jenkins, Clough, Cornish (s), 29.
Gill, Weedon, Hawkins, Roebuck (s), 18; v. McFie, Cannell, Arthur, Des Forges (s), 34. Andrews, Street, McLeod, McGill (s), 18; v. Parkes, Durgant, Sorrenson, Dudley (s), 33. The totals were: Okato 40, Opunake flfi; the grand totals on the day's play being Opunake 146, Okato 10G. During the afternoon, tea was dispensed by the ladies, and at the conclusion of the play, Mr. F. Roebuck, snr., thanked the Opunake Club for a very pleasant (lay's recreation, and expressed the hope that the two clubs would meet more often during, tke next season. In replying, Mr. Sorrenson thanked the Okato president for his kind remarks, declaring that next season the elubs should meet at a nearlier date when the greens would be in better condition. He also congratulated the,visitors on the progress they had made during this, their first, season.
