A telegram received yesterday by the Inspector of Police at Wellington' from Constable Dick, stationed at Martinborough, stated that the body of a native named Simon Hadfield was found on the beach at Whangainioana on Saturday afternoon, It is' surmised that the deceased, who ,vas forty-six years of age, met his death by drowning, while returning home across the outlet to Lake Wairarapa. SENSATION AT LYTTELTON. Chrlstelmreh, April 23. ' A horrible sight confronted Philip Wells, a barman, employed at iTie Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton, on Saturday morning, when, failing to receiver any response to his knocks, he entered t'lie room occupied by iPeter Little, a porter in the same establishment, and found him lying on tbe floor with iliis throat cut, and a razor beside him. To obtain access to the room (reports the Christchurch News), Wells bad to burst in the door, tlhe outside knob of the handle being missing. Little, who was a single man, of fortythree years of age, was last seen alive at 3.30 p.ni. on Friday, and although he did not subsequently appear at the tea-table, he seemed tp be in bis usual health. When discovered on Saturday morn' ing, ilie bad evidently been dead for some hours. Nothing is known which might have caused the deceased to act as be appeared to have done.
