-TABANAKI CHAMPIONSHIB TOURNAMENT. THE SECOND DAY'S PLAY. Fine weather again prevailed for the second day of the Taranaki golf tournament at New Plymouth yesterday, and the heavy rain of Sunday left the links at Waiwakaiho in splendid order, though a strong southerly wind was against good golf in the afternoon. The principal'features of the day's play were the second round and the semi-finals of the championship. B. L. Taylor (Wellington) beat S. J. Smith (New Plymouth), and the other New Plymouth players, F. S. Johns and K. B. Bain, were put out by L. Climie (Wellington) and L. Seifert (Palmerston North) while S. Turner (Wellington) played a keen contest, and Sim eventually gained the upper hand and won two up and one to play. The semifinals in the afternoon both provided good games, Taylor and Climie being left in to play the final this morning. A few years ago Taylor won the Taranaki championship at Waiwakaiho, and while he is playing in form likely to provide him with the honor again he will have a strong opponent in Climie, and a very close tussle is anticipated. In addition to the championship handicap events were also played yesterday, and in each- case there were good entries. A men's bogey handicap was played in' the morning and was won by E. J. Reid (Wellington), who was "ail square" with bogey. Eeid played a very good round, which included three twos. His card read:—Out: 4, 5, 4, 0, 2, 5, 2, 6, 5—39. In: 4, G, 3, 5, 2, 8, 5, 5, 7—45. A ladies' bogey handicap was won by Miss M. G. Free (New Plymouth), and a men's medal handicap in the afternoon was won by F. S. Parkes (Palmerston North). The putting competition was atso in progress all day. The tournament will conclude this morning. The final of the championship will start at 9 a.m., and handicap events will also be played.
