NEW ZEALAND'S RHINE.

GOVERNMENT CONTROL URGED. By s'elegrapli.—Press Association. Wangamii, April 19. ■ -'A deputation representing the Wangamii, Taum'arnnui and other interested local bodies waited upon the Premier to : day, and urged- that the Government should take over the control of the Wangamii river and run a State steamer service. The deputationists. said that the volume of water in the river was de-. creasing yearly, owing to.the denudation of the bush in .the hinterland, and permanent works were necessary to maintain the river in a navigable state. Mr. Massey said that he recognised the river was a national highway, and. he- believed the time would come when the request of the deputaiton would ho carried into effect, but nothing in that direction was possible while the war lasted. The Premier promised to get an expert to report on the river.
