TARATA DOG TRIALS.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The ninth annual gathering 0 f fho Tarata Sheep Dog Trial Club, which was held in Mr. K. Paterson's property at Tarata on Thursday and Friday, proved very successful; indeed, never in the history of tlie club has the work of the dogs in the open events been so uniformly good. There were splendid entries in each event, competitors haling from as far away as Kai Iwi, and the judges had a very difficult task in awarding the prizes, but their decisions gave general satisfaction. The official judge (Mr. T. A. Winks) was unable to be present owing to the ilness of his wife, and as it was impossible then to obtain a substitute outside, three of the competitors filled the breach. Mr. H. Lambert judging the open events. Mr. Toeker the huntaway, and Mr. Seott the local event, the first-named thereby sacrificing liis chances of winning two events for which lie had two dogs entered. The arrangements for the' trials were very complete, Mr. A. Corkill (president) keeping a keen eye <sn every detail and looking after the comfort of visiting competitors,' whilst the secretary (Mr. W. Topping) proved the right man in the right place. The committee all did their share. The officials were:—Flag steward, Mr. J. Waite; dog steward, Mr. F, Hogan: mounted steward, Mr. A. E, Taylor; time-keeper, Mr. E. .1. Ible; sheep stewards, Messrs Drummond and George. The sheep, provided by Mr. 11, Sander, were a fine, strong lot.

The, weather on the first day was ideal and attracted a large attendance. Or the second day it Was threatening and dull, but the attendance was good, and the Patriotic. Fund, to which the profits are to be applied, should benefit considerably. On the first day a late start was made, owing to the delay over flic appointment of judges, but matters were kept moving, with the result that the final dog finished its course just at dusk on Friday evening. Mr. 'P. Tocker's Chum put up a great performance, winning two events and securing a cup and a gold nredal. Mr, C. 11. Hay had a fine team of dogs and secured a first, two seconds and three thirds. Mr. R. McMullian scored a first and a cup, but magnanimously handed them over to the runnet-up, and Mr. 11. 'Lambert secured the maiden cup, a popular win, owing to his generosity in agreeing to act as judge, thus having to withdraw his dogs from competition in those events.

Sheep-guessing' competitions were held 'each day under the supervision of Mr. Weston. The results were: First dav. 11. Rangi, .W/Übs (actual weight '4Clbsj: second day, C. Garratt, lG4'/ 2 lbs (actual weight lGGlbs). -

The catering was again in the hands of Mrs. Guildford. The recruiting officer was on the ground the first day and secured two or three recruits. Follo.lving are detailed results:—
