MOA ROAD BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. T!ic oi-diiiary meeting of the Moa Road Board was held at lnglcwood on .Saturday, when there were present: Messrs. H. Trimble (chairman), J. A. Bridgeman, W. G. Shoemark, CI. Capper, ((. Clough, J. Hueker.'J. Williams, and A. E. Laurence. Leave of absence <vas granted Mr. Hopson. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer (Mr. W. R. Davies) reported that work on the John's Road had been attended to. The heavy rain on the Sth inst. had caused damage to the Ngatoro River protection works to the extent of £2. Repair work had been completed. The Borough roller had been procured and the Bristol and Kaimata Road's metalling contracts had been completed. The crusher was now working satisfactorily, 250 yards being crushed in 4*- days. The work of scarifying and rolling last year's metal would be finished about Monday, and, weather permitting, the roller wonld proceed to Ratapiko about Tuesday. An eightecn-inch culvert on the Durham Road was dangerous, and he suggested that it should be moved 20ft lower down. Mr. Sampson would "give a day's free labor. The wire rope for the roller was now to hand. The deviation of the stream on the Kohete Road was proceeding slowly, about five chains havir.s been completed. The pipes were now in readiness to replace the tunnel on M'ana Road. General maintenance work had been effected on the Dudley, Upland, Egmont, Norfolk, Durham, Johns, Lincoln, Everett, Bristol, Rimutauteka, York, Kaimata. Kohete, Mana and Ratapiko Roads. Twelve nine-inch and six twelve-inch' pipes had been manufactured, and 20 pipes had 'gone out. The report was adopted. SPEED OF MOTOR CARS. It was resolved to support the Levels County Council in its efforts to have lgeislation introduced to allow. local bodies to pas by-laws regulating the speed of motor cars, and also urging that motor car drivers should be. licensed The opinion was general that there was need for the limitation of speed. The chairman favored limitation of sped provided the limit was not fixed absurdly low. He instanced eases where the speed had been fixed at four miles an hour, a rate at which it was almost impossible to travel with a car, LEPPEB ROAD. Special order was made in connection with the raising of a special loan of £2700 for metalling Lepper Road. Mr. Geo. Capper said that when the deputation was in Wellington in connection with the Moa County proposal, the county chairman, in reply to a question, informed the Hon. G. W. Russell that the Council had never been asked by the Rrtid Board for a subsidy to any of its roads. He considered this was a deserving case, and thought that the Taranaki County Council should be asked for a subsidy of £2OO for this road. The Taranaki County Council would he taking the road over in twelve months time, and this money could be advantageously expended with the loan money. The'road carried a great deal of traffic. He moved that the subsidy be applied for., A councillor pointed out that if the money was granted, the rest of the riding would suffer. The motion was seconded by Mr. Laurence, but lost on the casting vote of the chairman. The question of proceeding to call tenders was discussed, but was held over. It will probably be arranged to call tenders in June or July, so that the work can be commenced as soon as possible in the spring. APPLICATION FOR GRANTS. Tin? Public Works Department forwarded a circular asking the Board to make amplication for any granted required for roads and bridges as early as possible. The chairman reported that he had applied for the following grants: Ngatoro bridge, £500; Leppei Road remetalling, £100; Kohete Road bridge, £200; Egmont Road, £200; Kaimata Road South, £2OO (voted last year); Everett Road, £3OO (voted last year); Makara Bridge, Bristol Road, £300; Rimutauteka Road, £IOO (voted last year). GENERAL. Mr. Laurence drew attention to a culvert at the junction of the Kohete and Tariki Roads which overflowed. The overseer considered the pipes were too small to carry the water. The Stratford Patriotic Committee invited the Board to be present at the Soldiers' Day demonstration. The chairman reported that Miss Davies had been appointed assistant clerk. The balance-sheet showed receipts to have been £Ol !)s Od and expenditure £454 10s lid. There was a credit balance of £9Bl 10s 3d. The chairman reported that he had arranged to pay the Inglewood Borough Council 15s per diem for ,the use of the roller, actual working time. Accounts amounting to £261 19s were passed for payment.
