Mr, J, McAllister has been nnanU mously re-elected Chairman of ■ the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. At the Manaia Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evening a farewell social was tendered to the Rev. W. H. Howes and family, prior to their departure to Rangiora, Mr. and Mrs. Howes being presented with a purse of sovereigns as a slight token of the esteem in which they are held. A specific sum was included in the purse wherewith' the recipients were asked to bity a memento foi their daughter and son. There was a crowded platform at the Stratford railway station on "Tuesday ovening to witness the arrival of \two returned troopers. Private T. .1, Shcaltan (Stratford), and Private AVhytf (Car. diff), who had been invalided home. Captain Foljambe, who was born in 1882, joined the NnrNiuift; berland Fusiliers in January, 1002, ami when two battalions of that regiment were dhiionded in 1008 he transferred .to the Oxfordshire and Bncklnglinn'uhiro Light Infantry. He was promoted {o captain in April, 1014, and' took the opportunity, of meeting the Oth Haurakls when in camp at Cumbridge (the Hauraki Regiment is allied to the Oxfordshire and Buekinulwinshire. Staveley, one of the bestknown business men in Christchurch, died on Monday. Mr. Staveloy bciean his career with the Bank of New J!*aland, afterwards entering Into partnership with Mr. Richard T. Webb' tit Southbridge, where the firm of Wcb> and Staveley traded as produce and grain merchants and commission agents, He joined the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company in 1882, becoming Christchurch manager in 1805. This position he held until he retired froiu the service in December, 1011,.40 start business as a wool and produce and stock agent. He was chairman of directors of the Addington Saleyards Company. Mr. Staveley was a man of must genial temperament, and wa» deservedly popular.
