GENERAL SMUTS' ADVANCE. AN IMPORTANT SUCCESS, Received April 9, 6.5 p.m. London, April 8. General Smuts reports that the mounted men, under General Vanderventer, on April 4th surprised and surrounded ft German force, equipped with machineguns, in a mountain stronghold in the Arusha district. The Germans surrendered on April G. Official: General Smuts' later reports indicate that the success at Arusha was more extensive than appeared. The German force which capitulated was considerable. Seventeen European and 404 native prisoners have already surrendered, and others are comiig in. Machine-guns and much ammunition were captured.
