GENERAL- SMUTS' CAMPAIGN. COMING TO GRIPS. FIGHTING IN THE FOREST. „ Received April 2, 6.5 p.m, Capetown, April i. General Smuts has made a successful enveloping movement. The Germans contested every foot. The success of the operations was largely due to the accuracy of the intelligence department and the rcconnaisance work of the aviators, and General Smuts' skill in spreading his screen. The losses were not insignificant. The Seventh Regiment lost one-third of its men, and the Pretoria, Durban, and Johannesburg troops suffered heavily. The fighting took place principally in the shadows of the primeval forests of Kilimanjaro. The advance to the forests revealed thousands of the enemy. The troops behaved with great gallantry. They were a curious mixture, embracing men from all parts of the Empire, including some Australians and Canadians, and the tactics were dictated to them on-the terrain which necessitated them to come to grips, delivering rifle fire at close quarters and finishing with the bayonet.
