DISTRICT NEWS.
HAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent). A rathsr pleasant time was spent last Tuesday evening in the supper-room of the hall, the occasion being a farewell to Private Fred Billing . Mr. Cnndish presided. Speeches were made by Messrs. Taylor, Hughson sen., Gibson, and the chairman. Mr. J. A. Colnier presented a wristlet watch to Private Billing, who had worked for him for five years. Private Billing suitably returned thanks. Songs were sung by Mr. Evans and recitations by Mr. Christie, both gentlemen being well received. "Tipperary," and "Auld Lang Syne," were sung by the company. Supper was handed round. A working bee of those interested in school matters rolled up at the school on Wednesday afternoon with axes, saws etc., and played havoc with the trees which have been a source of annoyance to the schoolmaster and children for some considerable time. There were fat men, lean men, tall men, and short men, all agisting, headed by the chairman of the scho.il committee (Mr. A. Chapman). At three o'clock afternoon tea, presided over by Mrs. Chapman, was handed around, which was much appreciated by the toilers.
