SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

EAST ROAD CLUB. Tlio eighth annual meeting of the East Road Sheep-dog Trial Club was held o" Mr. O'Neill's property, Te Wera, on Thursday and Friday last under splendid conditions, and proved very successful. The weather was good, and the attendance was large. Splendid entries were received. Several young lads were among the competing shepherds, and their work elicited favorable comment. The arrangements for the meeting were good. The secretary, Mr. V. H. Nolan, was the moving spirit and attended to every detail. The sheep were provided by Mr. Nolan. He was ably assisted by the officials, Messrs L. Hodgson and T. Franks (mounted stewards), S. Wiles (dog steward), T. McIlroy (timekeeper), 0. MeAloon (flag steward) and B. Boyle (judge's clerk). Mr. W. B. Grant was judge, and his work, as usual, was faithfully performed, giving every satisfaction. The afternoon tea conducted by the ladies on both days was much appreciated, and produced over £6 in aid of the patriotic funds, to which the proceeds of the meeting will be devoted. The prizes were well divided, A. Stewart's veteran Jeff scoring one first, A. Rolfe's Lady Chief scored another first, whilst MeMullian's Nap obtained a first and a second, and B. Boyle's Toby a first. B. Boyle's Toby won specials for most points scored in classes 1 and 2, also classes 1, 2 and 3 ,and also for married ,man scoring most points in classes 1, 2 and 3. P. Coatc's Don won the special for single man scoring most point.? in classes 1, 2 and 3, and also for man scoring most points in classes 1 and 2 who had never previously won a first, second or third prize at a dog trial. E. MeMullian's Nap won the special for runner-up in the luintaway class, F. Spence, by means of Lass, won the gold medal for youth scoring most points with any one dog. The judge said the work of this lad throughout was very good. Detailed prize-list:—

Dog very rash at ring and a little, too keen. Had a lot of trouble steadying sheep at ring. Let sheep out of ring. Don: Cast to left and went out free, also up hill free. Headed too close in lmin 25see. Started sheep fair a*nd Drought them to crossing in fair line and style. Dog a bit rash and iet sheep past ring. Brought into ring from side and let them out again before time was called. Holding fair, command good. Dog and man never in position to hold sheep properly. Floss: Cast to right. Went out free. Took hill well and headed fair in lmin Usee. Started sheep from side. Dog very noisy after starting and inclined to run on left wing too wide. Did a lot of useless running. Brought sheep into ring in fair line, dog out of position. Let sheep out of ring. Holding and command fair. Man and dog failed to get into proper position when holding. Head, (Pull, Drive and Yard. Maximum points: Heading 8, pull 1, through hurdles 5, style yarding 6, yarding 4, command 10; total, 40. Time, 12 min.

Toby: Cast to left. Started free. Stopped, re-cast and headed too close in limn asec. Split sheep. Dog noisy and a bit rash. Brought to peg in good line at first attempt. Very steady. Got through hurdles at first attempt. Man helped rather much at hurdles. Got sheep into position at pegs first attempt. Started sheep a bit rash and let them past the pen. Cot sheep into pen first attempt.- Style and command good.

Troy: Cast to right. Went out up hill in good line and style. Headed on one side in 45sec. Started sheep from side. Brought back in fair line, though inclined to run wide. Brought to peg in g-ood line first attempt and let sheep off course, going to hurdles. Through first attempt. Turned sheep back going to peg. Had trouble getting into position at pegs. Brought s heep to pen in good line. Let past pen when time was called.

Spot: Cast io right. Started free. Went up in good line. Started sheep before heading in s(!sec. Started a little too rash and dog too far away from sheep while- pulling. Brought sheep to peg in fair line and to hurdles in good line. Through at first attempt. Man went too far past hurdles. Missed pegs and let sheep right back on course. Let sheep right away. Time called. Dog- under good command, but a bit slack at yard. Huntaway, between flags, on a zig-zag course, about a quarter of a mile. Time, lOmin. Nolan's Poop, 7-3-9-8 27 Twelve entries. JUDGE'S NOTES. Jeff: Let sheep slightly off course. Through first flag first attempt. Through second flag, 'good line, first attempt. Turned sheep slightly back after passing top flag. Finished course in good style. Noise and command good. Time, 4min 20sec. Nap: Sheep went through first flag, but were then let off course. Through second and also top flags in good line. Let sheep off course passing top flags. Put out of sight. Good style and good command. Time, 4min 30sec. Nell: Started sheep nicely.
