PICNIC RACE MEETING.
KT WAITOITOI BEACH. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.
That the annual picnic race meeting hold on the magnificent stretch of beach at Waitoitoi, under the auspices of the Uruti Beach Picnic Club is gaining in popularity was evidenced by the large attendance yesterday. Not only were settlers from Uremii, Okoke, Uruti, and surrounding districts present in large numbers, with their families, but visitors journeyed from as far afield as New Plymouth and Hawera. The spot is an ideal one, the long stretch of hard level sand lending itself admirably to the purpose, whilst the higher land overlooking the beach is capable of accommodating numerous picnic parties. There, were no large stakes to compete for; merely small sweepstakes, but these drew laraje fields the spirit of honest rivalry being present. There was no stipendiary steward there; for he was not needed, all being triers. Being a post entry meeting, the officials had a very >msy time. They realised that time and tide wait for no man, and that the track world be covered at full t : do, and consequently pushed matters forward. Mr. C. H. Barnett, lion, sec, capably filled the bill. Mr. T. N. Skelton was starter and dispatched his fields well, and, Messrs H. Ellis and W. Tucker, the judges, gave satisfaction, their decisions being prompt. Messrs. Corcoran and Kapinga acted as handicappns, and acquitted themselves well. Mr. H. .Tones, was clerk of the course, and Mr. P. Shccnim. c-S.-rk of the scales. Constables uipouple (Waitara), and Parkinson (New Plymouth), were present, but had little to do.
The committeo in charge of the arrangements were: Messrs. * H. Ellis (chairman). W. McKenzie. IT. Oxenham, W. Day, D. Butt, E. Pepperell, L. O'Neill, A. McLennan, B. Russell, and C. H. Barnett (secretary), and they are to be congratulated upon the success of the meeting.
The principal event, the Urenui Cup, was won by Red Line, who also won the local race. G. Baker was very successful in the saddle, securing four firsts, a second and a third. Results: MAIDEN HACK. Stockman,'s Jack, Christiansen's Belle and Weston's Duma. Won. by a long neck, the third horse three lengths away. PONY RACE. Six furlongs.—C. Rumball's Campass (E. Pepperell), 9.7, and W. Paul's St. Pola (C. Sproson), 9,3, dead-heat, 1: N. Jones, Nupin (R. Brown). 9.0. 3. Also started: P. Aubrey's Bob 8.10. A great finish, third horse sbmo distance away. URENUI CUP. One'and a quarter mile.—J. G. Glassford's Red Line (G. Baker), 10.5, 1; J. MeLennan's Speedwell Max (R. Brown), 9.10, 2; IT. L. Abbott's Wee Paul (W. Crowe), 10.12, 3. Also started: A. Wood's Black Cat 10,2, 10. Stockman's Ridicule 10.2, F. Aubrey's Merry Maid 10.0,. Miss Perrott's Admiral Bell 9.13, C. Rumball's Mangapou 9.13, J. Edwin's Lady Lupin 9.7, C. Smith's Onone 9.7, Weston's Duma 9.7. A good start, of which Wee Paul had slightly the worst. Won by three lengths, two lengths 1 enveen second and third. TROT. About one mile.—J. Jones' Trixie (Geo. Won by threequarters of a length, the third horse some distance awav. FARMIOES- PLATE. Six furlongs.— O. Smith's Onone, 10.0 (G. Baker), I; Miss Perrott's Admiral Bell, 11.7, (A. Northeott), 2; O. Rumball's Mangapou, 11.7 (10. Pepperell), 3. Also started: 10. Stockman's Jack 10.10, C. Stoikman's Black Jack 10.7, Ekdalil's Tipperary 111.5, A. Wood's Black Cat 10.3, Paul's St. Pola 10.0, Christiansen's Belle 10.0, J. Smart's Roughie 10.0, \V. MoKcime's Nellie 1(1.0. Onone came with a great hurst in the last two furlongs, and winning by tivo lengths gave G. Baker ms fourth winning mount. The third horse was three lengths further back. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Won easily by several lengths, the third horse three-quarters of a lenxth further back.
