RELIGIOUS CONVICTIONS.

EXEMPTIONS AT AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. Two recent arrivals from England applied to Mr. F. V. Fraser, S.M., for exemption from military service on the ground that it was contrary to their religious convictions, believing that the bearing of arms was contrary to Christ's teachings. The Magistrate said that as the law stood he must grant these exemptions, though it was hard to understand how anyone who had studied the causes and effects of the present war could , hold such opinions. The sergt.-major representing the Defence Department, remarked, during the hearing, that he could not help telling the two applicants that if he had his way they would both have been in the firingline \yitli a gun apiece.
