A London cable savs tlmt Mr. W M. Hughes 's improving in health. Mr. F. J. Mount, solicitor, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been nominated as a candidate for election to the Public Service Appeal Board. Messrs. H. Taylor and F. Kggleton, of Egmont Village, have enlisted, and have passed the medical examination for service at the front. v Mr. iTustice Stringer has arrived in Aew Plymouth to preside over the aitting of the Arbitration Court here today. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop- of Auckland, who left recently for Rome, has cabled to the effect that ho is improving rapidly in health, and that ho is enjoying the trip. Mrs. Wells, of Pa tea, who is in her ninetieth year, recently sent a parcel to the Military Hospital Guild of Wanganui, containing socks, mi£tens, and Balaclavas, all knitted by herself. At the March examination for lnnd surveyors, wliicli has just concluded, ten candidate sat and three passed, namely, T. D. McLean (Grevmouth), F. R. Smale (Hamilton), and F. A. Fendall (Auck-' land). —Press Association. Mrs. J. Savage, of Tututawa, has received word that her brother, Private J. R. Moir, of Queensland, who was reported wounded, was killed at the landing at Gallipoli. Miss Moir, of Huiroi. is also a sister of the deceased soldier, A Christchurch message states that Miss Thurston, matron of the hospital, has been granted leave of absence by .the Board to take charge of the Walton-on-Thames military hospital, a position she was invited to by the High Commissioner.

The death occurred yesterday morning at Tauherenikau, of Private Roger Byrnes, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Byrnes, of Rahotu. Death was due to complications supervening measles. Deceased, who was only 20 years of we, was a member of the Eleventh Reinforcements. He will be accorded a military funeral at Featherston. The period of Mr. .T, Maekay's service as Government Printer expires on Friday next. Applications for the position Jie vacates closed on the first of this month, but so far jio announcement has been made as to his successor. The Commissioners are awaiting the arrival in Wellington of the Hon. G. W. Russet! (Minister for Internal Affairs), who is in charge of the Printing Office. Mr. R. L. Oarden, well-known at as holding a commission in the 11th Regiment (Tnranaki Rifles), and as lately a sergeant-instructor in infantry at Trentlmm, ]ws been nppointed a second-lieutenant in the N.Z.E.F., and posted to C. Company of the lltli Reinforcements, for active service. Second-Lieutenant L. W. Meuli (formerly of the Manaia Senior Cadets), has been posted to the same company. Mr. JfP. Luke, Mayor of' Wellington, accompanied by Mrs. Luki and some members of his family, liavq been staying for a few days at the Dawson Fails Mountain House. Yesterday they motored into Klthatn.on their way to New Plymouth. Mr. Luke expressed himself delighted with his .stay at tlia Mountain House and with the general progressiveness of the district, the roads in particular taking his attention,— Argus. Mr. David Mitchell (father of Madame Melba), whose death on Sunday" occurfed in Melbourne, was the brother-in-law of the late Mr. J. W. Walker, who died at Remuera last Friday. They. wer< mates on the diggings in the early dayi of the Melbourne goldfleld.. It is singular (says tho Auckland Star that thej should have died within a day of each other.
