OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The death of William Malcolm, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Malcolm, Main South Road, came as a shock to us on Saturday morning;. He was removed to the Hawera Hospital on Wednesday, and last Friday there was every hope that he would pull through the scourge of infantile paralysis. Deceased was telegraph messenger at the local office. The unfortunate part of the affair is that Mrs. Malcolm, who haji gone to Christclmrch on a health recruiting trip, left before her son was taken ill, and arrived at Hawera after he had passed away. The sympathy of us all is with the boreavod family. The funeral on Monday was very largely attended, the Rev. R. Welsh officiating at the graveside. \ The representatives of the Parihaka Road Board, Egmont County Council, and Opunake Town. Board ' met last Thursday afternoon in the council chambers to consider a recruiting plan. The Egmont County chairman (Mr. M, Fleming) presided. After a good deal of discussion, during which some members voiced their opinion on faults they alleged -were made by the Defence authorities, it was decided to appoint two returned soldiers to canvass the distiret for ercruits. The two appointeds are Lance-Corporal Davcy, and Trooper Kitchingman. The appointments were Made for a month, at a salary of £0 each per week.

At Te ICiri, on Friday night, the public liall was crowded on tlie occasion of a welcome home to Lance-Corporals Davoy and Cook. Mr, Coupe (chairman of the meeting), welcomed the soldiers back on behalf of Te Kiri residents, and thanked them for having served their King and country when tlie call to arms was first sounded. Presentations of travelling hags were made by Mr. Chambers, on behalf of the residents, to both soldiers, and the evening was spent in dancing. Lance-Corporal Davoy, in returning thanks, gave an interesting speech, and urged those who were able, to go to the front to go and play their part. At the S.M. Court 011 Thursday two separation orders were granted by Magistrate Crooke. on the wives' petitions, namely, Mary Bevan v. Albert Bevan (Awatuna), and M. A. Leatham v, C. F. Leatham. Custody of the children was given to the mother in each ease, the fathers having to pay maintenance for each of their children and also to the mother, amounting to ;>s for eacli child nnd 10s for the mother.

reserved judgment in the case, heard on the previous court day. of F. Watson v. Opunake Sawmilling Company, claim for £10(1 and a lien over the tvannvav, was given for, amount claimed and costs, but 110 lien was granted. In the claim for wages made by A. and F. Dean against the same company, judgment was given for amount claimed with costs, but the lien applied for was not granted. Mr. Marshall appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr. flow for defendant, in each case. • The directors of the Oaonui Dairy Company hold a meeting on Monday nnd decided to push on with the erection of the new- building, etc., as soon as it was possible. The meeting lasted many hours.
