SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
- AWAKINO COLLIE CLUB. THE SECOND DAY. The weather was unfavorable for the .lecond day of the Awakino Collie Club's tenth annual gathering, held on Mr. W. D. Thompson's property. The officials (again attended strictly to business and carried the events through, though the 'numerous entries caused each class to occupy a considerable time. In the huntaway, the work of the winner, a young shepherd from Piri Piri station, attending his first trial, was particularly good. Sonic of the work shown b'v other dogs was disappointing. In addition to the officials mentioned on Saturday, Messrs J. Bennett and E. Whittle, of New Plymouth, rendered valuable assistance. The president (Mr. J. Scott) kept a keen eye on the whole organisation, and ,the visitors, and particularly the visiting pressmen, are greatly indebted to him, and also to the 'secretaries (Messrs Harrison and Lett), who gave them every possible assistance. It was not expected to finish on Friday evening, but as a number of competitors scratched their dogs in the final event, it was found possible by working in semi-darkness to complete in the two days. The work on the second day showed a distinct improvement or. that of the first day, the cooler atmospheric conditions probably suiting both dogs and sheep. The latter were provided by Mr. Calvert. The work of the judge. Mr. W. B. Grant was never questioned, giving every satisfaction. The officials also all carried out their various' duties with despatch. The weather interfered with the attendance, but nevertheless it is expected that the proceeds, which are to be devoted to the Belgian fund, will exceed last year, when the club raised £l4O for the same purpose.
Tlie most successful competitor was the youthful shepherd, K. Black, who with his dog Olen won two first prizes, two cups and two specials. B. Lett won one first, two seconds, a third, two cups, and a special. JG. Paynter won a first and a cup. Further results are:—
