DISTRICT NEWS.

URENUI. (From Our Own Correspondent). On Thursday the Urenui Athletic Club held a patriotic meeting, when there was a good attendance and glorious weather, and the financial results were very satisfactory. The programme was arranged with the idea of causing amusement to the spectators rather than proving the athletic ability of the competitors. The results were:—Mile bicycle race: Hy Honey field 1, A. Whitehead 2. Boot; race (16 competitors): A. Cole 1, W. Topless 2. Pony race, school children (four entries): Three competitors bolted for the fattening paddock, the result being that this was one of the funniest races on record. Obstacle race: T. Pukere 1, C. Pukere 2. Married Ladies' Race: Mrs. N. Pepperell 1, Mrs. A, Northcott 2. Stepping-the-chain (49 entries) : J. Jones, Kaipikiri. Sheep weight-guessing (156 entries): R. H. Pepperell guessed exact weight, 1291b5. Sheaf-tossing (25 entries): I. Topless. Horse events.—Potato race (20 competitors): Hy. Honeyfield. Shirt race (1(1 competitors): C. Stockman 1, D. Stockman 2. This was a very popular and amusing event. Maiden jump: A well-contested event. Won by W. Rose's Black Jack, with W. McKenzi'e's Nellie 2. Open jump (four flights): L. O'Neill's Mac 1, A. 11. Halcombe's Larakiu 2.

An exhibition of horsemanship on Mr. McClelan's buck-jumpers from the '■never-never" was enjoyed by the onlnokors. A ball was held in the evening in the hall. The day's takings were about £l5O, a7id where one and all worked so hard for the success of the day it would be invidious to single out any for especial praise, unless it be to sincerely thank the Waitara Band for their kind attendance and their excellent .music given gratis. Last year our sports club handed over £B2 to the Patriotic Fund, and this year we shall more than double even that good effort.
