Fx-constsble Crowe has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment for criminally libelling Manamny, Superin-. tendent of Police. The libel was contained in a pamphlet alleging that Manamny investigated the murder of the diamond merchant Bauer; that Mrs. Manamny was wearing Bauer's missing diamonds; and also that. Manamny obtained the proceeds of the crimes. TELF-PHONE REGULATIONS. Sydney, March 24. A new regulation makes any person using foreign language over a telephone'liable to penalties, 'besides being cut off. COST OF MEAT. Sydney, March 25. As the outcome of the continued protests against the high price of meat the Government has directed the Necessary Commodities Commission to inquire into tho whole question. FAIR RENTS COURT Sydney, March p5. Now that (he Fair Rents Court; is in operation builders and estate agents are proclaiming that, the Act will seriously affect the building trade and that already a considerable amount of money intended for investment in the construction of dwellings has been withdrawn, They object to the Act fixing a net return of six per cent, and point out that money for a huge class of speculative building cannot be obtained below this figure and such a limit will kill that class of builder. They urge that rents must advance proportionally to the increase in the cost of building. APPLICATION OF CAPITA^ Melbourne, March 25. Replying to a deputation at the Trades Hall, pointing out the necessity of the establishment of new industries after the war, Mr, Pearce said the Government must have a voice in saying how capita! should be applied. Capitalists should not invest, in picture shows while industries were languishing for want of capital. Capital belonged to the country, and the Government should have the right to see it was invested for the benefit of the country.
