NO HALF-SOVEREIGNS.
THEIR COINAGE DISCONTINUED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. J Auckland, March .17. A peculiar effect of' the war conditions has just been learned by banking institutions. For some reason which has not been made public, the Australian mints are not able to make halfsovereigns, and. further supplies of this coin will not he available until after the war. The manager of. one of the Auckland banks stated that half-sove-reigns at present in circulation will not be withdrawn, but no further supplies can now be obtained. He remarked' that the public will experience very little inconvenience from this restriction, as payments may be made by half-crown's instead of half-sovereigns, and there is no difficulty in regard to the minting of silver. The production of sovereigns has not been affected by the causes responsible for the discontinuance, of the supply of half-sovereigns, and it is understood that supplies of new half-sovereigns have been discontinued by the London mints as well as the Australian.
