GENERAL SMUTS' CAMPAIGN. GOOD PROGRESS MADE. London, March 14. General Smuts cables that an action commenced on March 11 in the Kitovo Hills, west of Taveta, and resulted in an obstinate struggle. A formidable obstacle was the densely wooded steep hills, which the enemy was holding in strong force. Positions were taken and retaken several times, but in the final bayonet attack between 0 o'clock and midnight two parties, led by Colonel Freeth and Major Thompson, secured a hold and held on until reinforced in the morning, when the German native troops were seen streaming away towards Kahe, south-westerly, while at Kitovo the progress of the Mounted Brigade cleaved the foothills north-east of Kilimanjaro, where the enemy forces were cut off by a rapid British advance on March Bto 10. Simultaneously a strong column, under general Stewart, appeared in the rear of the main German concentration. The enemy is retreating southwards towards the Usumbara railway.
