MR. ALLEN'S REPLY TO MODERATE LEAGUE'S QUESTIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday, Last week the. secretary of the Moderate League addressed a letter to the Defence Minister on the subject of the early closing of hotels. Mr. Allen replied that the matter will be placed before Cabinet. Replying to five specific questions, llr. Allen says (1) that he does not think that the materia! efficiency of the forces is impaired through drink; he does not doubt that some suffered, but the percentage is not large: (2) there is no drunkenness in camp, as liquor is excluded; (3) three men have been discharged for drunkenness; (4) drunkenness has retarded the progress of some, but they are comparatively few; (5) some soldiers have through drink acted to the detriment of their occupation as soldiers, but he did not think many had done so.
