SPEED OF MOTOR CARS.

EXCESSIVE IN TARANAKI COUNTY. In the course of his report to the Taranaki County Council yesterday the engineer (Mr. R. W. Fisher) stated:—"l have detected owners of motor-cars travelling at excessive speed. This question has been on more than one occasion discussed in Council, but there is nothing in the by-laws to regulate this point. Ido not refer to motor lorries and the Transport Company's vehicles, which have been on their good behaviour, as much as motor-cars running daily services, and also privately-owned cars. I see that a local body'in another district is considering the limitation of •speed, and it would be well to adopt some such course when considering additions to this county's by-laws, because with the continued improvement of the roads the evil is increasing." A copy of a resolution passed at a conference of South Canterbury local bodies was received expressing the opinion that a limit of speed for motor-cars and motor-cycles should be fixed and that drivers should be licensed. -It was decided to support the resolution.
