STRATFORD RECRUITING BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday!' The local Recruiting Board are 1o be congratulated on the splendid work they are doing to aid recruitin" Since Wednesday they have, enroll eleven recruits, and are still busy looking up those who should enlist. On Friday night Messrs Boon and Sole addressed a large gathering at the Plunkett Nurse Social at the Town Hall and on Saturday night, Mr. James Masters (chairman) spoke at the Picture Theatre, while Mi-. P. Skoglund spoke at the send-off at Toko. The chairman in his remarks on Saturday night, said there were 122 single men'in Stratford eligible to serve, and he asked them to come forward and do their duty. Today, a young fellow called on Mr. Masters and said that as a result of his appeal on Saturday night he wished to offer his services. He was promptly accepted. The committee intend to personally wait on every eligible single man in the town, to try and induce him to enlist. During Mr. Masters' speech on Saturday night one young man evidently thought the matter was a huge joke, .judging by >hi s behaviour, but ho at last caught the speaker's eye, and was promptly rebuked in front of the wholeaudience. The committee are .living a lot of valuable time to aid recruiting, and young men like the one alluded to, if they are frightened to go and do their ,bit for their country, might at any rate remember that conduct such as that on Saturday night will not be tolerated by the patriotic people of this town. The Stratford Municipal Band played patriotic music and as the train drew out of the station cheers were given for the departing men. Masters, member of the Education Board, visited the Waihapa Road and conferred with the settlers there regarding the establishment of a school in that district. Mr. Neil Brown has presented the Board with two acres of land to build a school on. The site is an excellent one, and will serve the children in the Robson Road as well. Mr. G, M.
