PATRIOTIC ART UNION'S. ■ Auckland, March 3. At the Methodist Conference to-night it was resolved: "That the conference views with alarm the increasing mania for gambling in f tbe > co»munitiJ , ,.#nd condemns the evil 'priittiplo- ot under which totaltsator betting, art union*, and raffles have flourished." The conference expressed its profound regret that, in the guise of patriotism, licenses should have been given bythoio in authority for unworthy methods •{ raising money for soldiers. The Rev. Mr. Chappell, supporting the motion "that the Government should I establish a strict censorship over all pictures before they were screened at the various picture theatres," laid that a picture theatre manager had informed him that on account of the morbid natyre of a picture which had been patted by the censor he would not allow it ta be shown. The Rev. T. F. Jones was appointed Secretary of the Foreign Missions Conk mittee. The Rev. Sinclair moved that ' the election of president and secretary of the conference be at the conference At which they take ofllee. "This was previously submitted to the Synod, and supported by five and objected to by four. The resolution was carried by 83 votes to 82.
