SWIMMING.
RULES OF THE TABOR SHIELD COMPETITION. Following are the rules governing the Tabor Shield competition and also the competition of junior squads for medals:— REEL WORK. A team will consist of seven members. 1. Fall in.—On the word fall in the members will form up in single line in reariof reel. . 2. Attention,—Members will stand properly at attention, with shoulders square to the front, arms hanging easily from the shoulder, fingers together, knees well braced back, heels together, the feet forming an angle of 40deg., the head erect and eyes looking straight to the front. 3. Right dress.—The right-hand member will stand fast, the remainder directing their head and eyes to the right and moving until they are in correct position. 4. Eyes front.—All turn head and eyes smartly to the front, 6. Instructor will here indicate each member's position in team: 1 Patient, 2 support, 3 beltman, 4 first linesman and resuscitator, G second linesman, 0 third linesman, 7 reel man. 7. Reel form. —Nos. 1 and 7 will go to the front handles, 3 and 5 to rear handles, 2 will stand by reel handle, 4 in rear, and 6 opposite No. 2. 8. Take up reel.—Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 7 will take hold of handles and stand erect. 9. March.—The team will march as directed, keeping their formation. 10. Halt. 1). Down reel. —Nos. 1, 3, 5, and 7 will place reel on ground. 12. About turn. —To places march. The whole will turn about and form up in original line behind reel, turning about and facing front when all are in line. No. 1 will now take belt from reel, place it in position about- 12ft. in front of reel, and place two coils of line between belt and reel, then return to his place. 13. No. 1 "Go."—No. 1 (patient) will swim out as directed. 14. No. 2 "Go."—No. 2 (support) will follow No. 1. 15. No. 3 "Go."—On the command No. 3 "Go," No. 3 will at once get into the belt, followed by No. 4, who will pick up the coil nearest to the belt and run behind No. 3 until belt is secured in place, when he will drop back to his proper position. While Nos. 3 and 4 are getting iway, Noa. 5 and 0 will take their places on the line, No. 7 going to reel handle. (NOTE. —No on, account must a linesman go out of his depth, unless the beltman is compelled to swim a great distance out, when the first linesman may swim out also, carrying the line with him. Distance between linesmen should not be less than 30 yards). When the beltman reaches patient and support, the patient is handed over to him, the support taking hold of line about 10ft. behind them, and waving one hand as a signal to the linesmen to haul on line. Nos. 4, 5, and C will haul in line, at the same time coming together in water about knee deep. When the patient has been drawn up to'them, No. 2 will raise his hand when No. 7 will cease to wind the line. No. 4 will go to the patient's right side, No 5 to his let, and No. (i to his feet. Nos. 4 and 5 will clasp their right and left hands respectively under the patient's back and their left and right under the shoulders, No. 6 taking the legs on his right side. The patient will be carried, head foremost, to point indicated and laid on the ground, the bearers going down together on their right knees. Nos. 5 and 6 will then take up their. position in rear, leaving room for Nos.. 1 and 4. When the patient has heen handed over to Nos. 4, 5, and 6, No. 2 will remove belt from No. 3 and thev will then proceed together to their places in rear of reel, leaving room for Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 0. No. 7 will replace belt on reel. No. 4 will now proceed with the "Schafer" method of resuscitation.
Promoting warmth (exhibition only). —Resting his left hand on patient's right, the operator will rub briskly four times from the wrist to the shoulder. Then bend the arm and rest the patient's head on it. Take the left arm and repeat as with the right, placing it back under the head when finished. Then with both hands rub four times over patient's shoulders, then four times up from the small of the back to under the armpits. Then four times inside and outside the legs, taking the right leg first, holding it at the ankle, and rubbing upwards. The patient is then turned over, the operator extending the patient's left arm above the head and placing the right arm alongside the body. Taking hold of the patient's shoulder and hip, he will roll the patient over and stretch both patient's arms upwards. The operator will then with both hands rub the face four times, then from the shoulders over the chest, then upwards from the abdomen to the armpits. He then raises the patient's left leg by the ankle, smartly snmck the sole of the foot four times, and rubs the leg from ankle to hip. Replace the leg gently on the ground and repeat with right' leg., Then raise the left arm and smack the palm and rub as with the legs, replacing the arm alongside the body when finished. Repeat with the riglit arm, but keep holtl of hands when finished and pull patient up. Then march to places in line. The points are as follows:—Control, 10 points; reel work, 10; water work, 40; resuscitation and warmth, 20; discipline, 10; general efficiency and COTreetgess, KMot&l, 19Q folate,
