Colonel Soult's Cup will live long in the memory of those who were fortunate enough to witness his magnificent finishing effort on Thursday last. Blocked ar.d bumped three furlongs from home, and then "pocketed"' at the turn his chance looked hopeless. Mullingar was "dying" in front of hint, and Moulu and Welcome Nusget had him fixed on the outside. Welcome Nugget then forged ahead, and O'Sliea, failing to get through on the rails pulled out and drew the flail. Welcome Nugget now had a five lengths advantage, and running oil strongly looked a certain winner. But the old gentleman was not done with by any means. , Every time O'Shea hit him he fairly leapt over the ground, and inch by inch he closed on the leader. Fiftv yards from home he got to Welcome Nugget's girth, and with a mighty effort he landed the stake by a bare half-length. His great stride was wonderful to watch, and considering the running he would have been very unlucky to lose. The Cup race was rim at a funeral pace in the early stages, Emperador and Moulu leading Mullingar, Multiply, El Gallo and Colonel Soult into the straight. Passing the stand the pace improved and along the back Mullingar made things very sulllry. Colonel Soult was running third at this stage, and j Welcome Nugget ttas on his flank., Mullingar was stopping over the last three furlongs, and the race resolved itself into a battle between Welcome Nugget, Moulu and the Colonel. The way the latter won stamped him as a great stayer, and with ordinary luck he would have won in a canter. A rise of 11 lbs does not seem harsh treatment to-day. Play Off's sensational Flying Handicap victory, though pleasing to his connections, was one of those unsatisfactory sort of races that leave a bad taste in one's mouth. Nones should have won, and nothing else. It was a. fine field that faced Mr. Skipwith, but the fourteen runners had a long delay at the post, possibly waiting for the money io be rung on, and when at last an- attempt was made to line them up Play Off caused further delay. The fractious horse is usually best treated by Starter Skipwith, and in this ease was treated to a "fly." Along the hack Interlude, Avon Park, Recorder, tried to go with the flying bay,, but the pace carried them off their feet. Nones threaded her way through the field to second place at the home turn, where Play Off still held a three lengths lead. Gamely answering Deeley's calls Nones closed on the leader gradually, but the post came just a stride too soon, the outsider lasting long enough' to win by a nose. It must be said for the winner that she showed a brilliant burst of speed, and under pressure finished on well. Recorder ran an honest race but had. ft good passage throughout. Avon Park, who was strongly sup- ' ported by her party, did well to gain fourth berth, and may have better luck before tie meeting closes. Flying Start belied hig name, getting out slowly, and being almost 100 yards behind Play Off at the end of three furlongs. Chortle was alio one of the unlucky ones. The time, !.13 2-fwec, was pretty idicS*
Black ftertlern's ability to win the Westmere Hurdles was sever ieubted, kut keing a hsrse of meods—mestlv bad Meads—these whe baeked him took an "eut" size in risks. As it turned eut he west, to the front at once, and the rest was just a la Desert Gold. The acceptances for the second day art first-class and the racing should be good. Colonel Soult may be favored for the Wanganui Stakes, though Tangihou and Welcome Nugget will all have friends. The elect of the Greenwood stable will tarry the bulk of the money in the Jackson Stakes. Leonta and Avon Park are not badly treated in the Autumn Handicap, and Hushman and Interlude appear to be in a class of their own in the Matara'wa Hack Handicap. Black Northern and Flingot are possibly the best conditioned horses in the Fordell Hurdles, and Mahzoltov and Veto in the Okoia Hack Race. Moulu and Ararat are nicely treated in the Harrison Hack Handicap, and Chortle, Play Off and Hushman have nothing to growl about in the Farewell Handicap. The riders of Tangihou and Emperador both broke stirrup leathers during the running of the Cup race. The former was going great guns at the finish. Vladian was badly galloped on in the Westmere Hurdles, and will not start to-day. Denise Ormc was suffering from ailments peculiar to her sex, and could not start in the Flying Handicap. Veto is the one to be on if they back her to-day. She finished well on Thursday after being badly placed.
