AN APPEAL IN NEW PLYMOUTH. . STREET COLLECTION TO-MORRO^ To-morrow will lip celebrated at French Tricolor Day in New pjymouth, when collections will be made to gather funds for the French Red Cross. The comforts of hospitals in France and the care of the French Red Cross worker* iaye saved the live 8 , of hundred* •( British soldiers fighting in Flanders, and an opportunity to attempt to repay this assistance slionld be gladly availed of by the people of New Zealand. To-morrow will «fivp the people of New Plymouth their opportunity for showing the practical sympathy of the community with our Ally, and a splendid response to the appeal will prove our appreciation. Wiien funds were asked for in New Plymouth to aaaiat the British Red Cross the public replied with a cheque for over £SOO, and it is hoped that tomorrow's collections will not be far, abort of that amount. A lar-ro number of ladies will make a thorough house-to-house canvass in the town and suburbs in the morning, while a bevy of young ladies will collect in the town from 9 a.m. to 0 p.m. The fund will b« increased by other moneyraising means. The proprietors of ttt* Empire Theatre and the Theatre Boyal will give part of the proceeds from tonight's entertainments, while a portion of the takings at the People's Picture* to-morrow night will also be dAiatedto the fund. Mr. Maunder, of Vffttifm, has donated four sheep to be sold rft th,e Haymarket to-morrow, and this should prove a good opportunity for this farmers to contribute. Also the committee of the Red Cross Market hare decided to give the takings at the market <*- morrow. The committee hope the public will help this good cause by sending contributions and by coming to the market to buy. The Marble Bar will band over nil its takings from 2.30 p.m. ii S p.m. Then there will be the ltt» Cross Fish Market in Devon Street. Complete arrangements have been made to obtain a large supply of fisb, and it is hoped to start selling between ft a.m. and 10 a.m. A cart loaded with all kinds of edible fish will be stationed in Devon Street Central and will be managed by :i staff of helpers, which will in* elude "fair fisher girls," while a moter< ear will enable other "fisher-folk t<( call at every shop and office in t3wn. ' ; So complete are the arrangement* for the collection that they provide a foil day's shopping and amusement for til* public on the following lines: —On reaching town give a donation to a djfllector; then purchase Sunday's supplies from the Red Cross Mart; then buy the breakfast fish at the Red Cross Fisb Mart; a cool drink at the Marble Bar should now prove refreshing; while the day may bo capped by a visit to the pictures.
