STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ffrom Our Own Correspondent.)

Stratford, Yesterday

A special meeting of the Coe.nc'.'i was held on Monday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Young, Hunter, Luwson, Hancock, Mills, Thompson, Stanley. Mr. C. 8. Curtis waited on the Council regarding the footpath in front of premises owned by his firm. The Council, in regarding the footpaths, had left a considerable distance from the step to the footpath. The Mayor said that the footpaths had been unsightly, and by regrading them they were now uniform, but to carry out the work suggested by Mr Curtis -vould mean putting the Council to a considerable expense, and he cmld not recommend the Council to adopt it. Cr. Lawson objected to the. Council doing worn on private property. The only thing the Council could do was to put the footpath back to its former level and leave it as an eyesore to the town.

The Mayor moved, "That the engineer be instructed to put the footpath to its former level." Seconded by Cr. Lawson. Cr. Hunter said the fact of the Council passing this resolution practically admitted (hat (hey had done wrong, and were liable. He suggested a small committee to meet Mr. Curtis and come to an amicable settlement.

His Worship then withdrew his motion, and moved that the matter be left in the hands of the Works Committee to meet Mr. Curtis, with power to act.—Seconded by Or. Young, and carried.

Messrs Webster, Dobson and Co., wrote asking that the lease of shops >". the new Municipal Buildings be transferred from themselves to Mr. Thomas Mercer. —Agreed to. The Council went into committee to consider electric light proposals, and the leases of the Municipal Buildings.
