STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. Tlip Stratford Ladies' Croquet and Park Tennis Clubs' lawn fete took place on the club's lawns in Regan Street on Thursday afternoon and evening, and was a, great success. The afternoon part " was taken up in progressive e'.'oquet and lawn tennis, and in the evening the grounds were lit up with arc lamps (thanks to the kindness of the Elerirtical Supply Company) and croquet and bowls were indulged in. The Egmont Club Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. R, Cottier, rendered line selections that were enjoyed by all, while the tea tents did good business. The attendance of the public wai good. The Serbian Belief Fund should benefit by a good sum through the function. v The lawn fete on Thursday evening was somewhat marred by the conduct of a returned soldier. ft is understood that the police have the matter in hand and that court proceedings will follow. It will be remembered that some months ago Mrs. X. F. Fulton, oi Xew Plymouth, was the lucky winner of a section of land in connection with an art union conducted by the local Scottish Society. Through the efforts of this society the section has been sold for £1;30, and this sum Mrs. Vullon has handed over to the Stratford Patriotic Committee. Three young lads faced the .Lnvuilc Court this morning on a charge i;,' facing the wheels of a railway jigger (~.' the line. The Bench admonished the boys for their thoughless conduct. At the same time, he said, a railway employee was somewhat to blame for leavirV; the wheels unlocked. The case was' dismissed. ■ T!ie borough workmen are at present asphalt the footpaths in Broadway, which have now been cut down to their proper levels.
